Mid-Maryland 18K in 1:16:30 (42:50/33:40)
* Well, arrived late from NYC to the news of a snowstorm moving in... I opted to skip the race and rest, but my competitive side got the edge and I raced out of bed to make the starting line - I figured I would attempt one loop of the snowed-in course and call it a day. Well, RD Phil Lang was hilarious in the pre-race, calling out that he had marked the course with a white line (XC style) and obviously, the snow covered it all. So, he ran with the lead pack (three of us) to "blaze the trail". Already on our first loop, someone had messed with the turn signs, so thankfully Phil was running with us to fix them. By 4M, I forged on ahead on the singletrack that I was familiar with and came through the first of five loops in 42:50 in first place and running away. At this point I decided that I was going to finish the 50K, since the loop was nice, although tremendously slippery. However, shortly into the first couple of miles of the loop, I could tell I had already taken a wrong turn (near some laughing Frisbee Golfers) and finished up the loop, knowing I had missed a section. So, instead of finishing the race, I defaulted to the second place winner and dropped because I could've kept going, but the race was ruined (as was the course). I am sure next year Lang will use ribbons on trees like most trail ultras instead of relying on ground markings. Very confusing following footprints in snow/mud on a loop course.
