Catching a Break

Something I have yet to do... catch a break in terms of health. Was finally healthy and then my foot goes numb and strains my ITB... so, now that I am getting very fit, my knee just aches all the time. However, that did not stop me from knocking out a solid 2.5 hours this morning in and around the Mountain, sporting an ITBS strap on my left leg and a shin sleeve compression on my right leg. Loving it...

I have to say, these long runs are quite the challenge. Man, just completing the allotted time is a mission, and I thought I was a long distance runner. Seems I like more of the power, speed running of up to 90' rather than a slow and steady 2h run, but I need to adapt. The more long runs the better.

So, I finally got to see Robin Rogers, my muscle therapist. Wow, what a difference. Leg feels much, much better, but it is not completely 100%. Still injured and still bothering me, but I will press on with treatment. I had a disappointing hill workout this morning. It was windy and from the gun I felt weak and tired. My muscles were not ready after running for 3 hours on Monday and then not much other than a 50-minute run 12 hours before, but still, I got the work in, which is what is counting. This night I will run again on the treadmill for cautions-sake.

So, my family and I were fortunate enough to get to meet Mr. Nick Willis of New Zealand and Reebok. Willis is a World-Class 1500M runner currently training for the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan. He was much taller than I expected, but what a real gentleman. We were able to chat for over an hour about running and life. It was quite neat, as he revealed that he had run a 29-second 200 meter run when he was 7 years old! We also got to meet Patrick Joyce of Reebok and NC State, who ran 28:48 in college and just recently ran 2:29 at Boston after losing 50-pounds and not running in over 5 years. Complete stud. A very nice night.

Well, very nice mileage week, dealing with injury, but my body responds to training. The more injured I get, the harder I run, the more healthy I become. I know, it's a contradiction of physiology, but it is my body. Pretty disappointed with this morning's race. I saw the CR was 21:28 and thought I could run a full minute faster... boy, was I wrong. First, I am just not fit enough. Secondly, the course was monstrous. A two-loop hilly circuit along the outskirts of Grant Park, I just did not have it today. Very low on energy. Absolutely no pop or desire to race hard, so more of a tempo effort, but I sort've fell apart from 2.5-3.5 miles, which is unacceptable with Peachtree on the horizon. We shall see. I am going to aim for at least 100 miles or so per week until Peachtree in order to improve upon my CB, 32:10. Here we go...
