* Finally tackled Cemetary Hill (aptly named by me because of a tiny, private cemetary at the peak of the hill) on Ilchester Rd. today in the midst of some storms. I was feeling good and rolling well, so I opted to head down Bonnie Branch and summit the monster. I have been living here over 6 months and have avoided this puppy at all costs, so it's a good sign that I challenged myself up this 18% grade (according to the truck warning sign "Use Brakes -18% grade")... at first it was like I was taking steps and not moving, but soon I got rolling and hit the peak (exactly 1 mile) in 6:57... my back and hips fatigued, but otherwise, I look forward to one day running a serious hill circuit on this puppy. Here is the course/elevation profile.
* So, I have crossed over the Dark Side and received a Garmin, thanks to my long-time friend, Kevin Landry, as he hooked me up with a Garmin Forerunner 110. I got the idea from my other great friend, Dave Howe, as he bragged so much about his, that I was compelled to get one for myself. Anyway, today was gruesome: I got a Yellow Fever Shot to fulfill my obligations to travel to Brazil in two week and then I went through another interview at work and finally got home late for my run, on which I felt quite poorly, perhaps due to the vaccination. However, I debuted my Garmin and was amazed to find that on my tremendously hilly 7-mile course, I averaged sub-6:30 pace on a very weak effort, which means that I have probably been running close to sub-6:10 miles, daily, in training. What a great sign! Anyway, some more rest and hopefully I can make it through the week with this Tropical Storm Nicole and hoping it doesn't wipe away my 50K this Sunday in PA.
